Women and Hearing Loss

Your hearing health is closely related to various health conditions. Hearing devices will enhance your quality of life and benefit cognitive functions. Studies show that men are twice as likely as women to experience hearing loss; however, women are more likely to seek treatment sooner and wear their hearing aids on a more regular basis than men.

For women, in addition to the usual ailments that cause hearing loss, it can also be due to the physical changes that only women experience. For example, some women may experience sudden sensorineural hearing loss during their pregnancy; others during menopause. Scientists theorize during pregnancy, hearing loss, although rare, may be caused by changes in the cardiovascular, hematological and endocrine system, which affects the circulation in the cochlea. The good news is, hearing is usually recovered after the baby’s delivery.

During menopause, there is a decrease in estrogen levels which may play a role in hearing loss. A Swedish study found women who don’t take hormone replacement therapy were more likely to have poorer hearing than those who do. A recent study shows that women who have a pattern of healthy eating habit, have a lower risk of hearing loss than those women who don’t eat well. A healthy diet would include lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, limiting sugar, salt, and animal fat.
